WILDLIFE & NATIONAL PARKS IN INDIA
India is unique in the richness and diversity of its vegetation and wildlife. About 90,000 sq. kms of Indian land is protected wildlife area, which covers 3 per cent of the country’s total land area. India has 441 Wildlife Sanctuaries and 80 National Parks, which are home to more than 350 mammal, 1,200 avian species and several other animal species which are unique to the subcontinent. Besides there are more than 30,000 species of insects, a number of species of fish, amphibians and reptiles. India’s Wildlife sanctuaries and national parks spread from high Himalayan ranges of Jammu and Kashmir to the southern tip of Tamil Nadu. These wildlife sanctuaries are vital for the conservation of endangered species like the Royal Bengal tiger, Indian one-horned rhino and the Asiatic Lion. |
