The ‘Holy City’ of Varanasi is one of the most sacred destinations for Hindus in India. Located on the banks of Ganges (which has been designated the status of ‘Mother’), Varanasi attracts numerous pilgrims throughout the year. Its origin dates back to several centuries and infact, a renowned author has even claimed that the origin of this city defeats the origin of history, tradition and legend, both individually and put together. Today, the city has developed itself to keep pace with the modern trends, though it has by no means lost touch with the traditions and customs that have given it a distinct identity.

Attractions :

The Ghats Of Varanasi - Varanasi is considered a sacred place by the Hindus world over. The Holy Ganges, on the bank of which this ancient town is located is also worshiped by the people. It is said that a bath in the holy water of Ganges purifies the body and soul of humans. As such the Ghat of Varanasi are the most frequented place in the town. The number of Ghats in the town is around hundred that are categorised into the ones that are open for bathing and another that serve as place for cremating dead bodies. There are also numerous temples beside the river bank that offer an opportunity to the visitors to bow their heads before god. Tourists can also simply walk on the ghats or take a ride in a boat.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple - The Kashi Viswanath dedicated to Lord Shiva is also known as the Golden Temple. In past, the temple has suffered from serious damages which were caused by the invading troops. However later, it was rebuilt and today, it is one of the major attractions of Varanasi. The temple is ornate with gold platings (which is the reason why it is called the Golden Temple) and presents a beautiful opportunity to the tourists to explore the temple in detain.

Bharat Mata Temple - This temple has a novel concept as its background which is also quiet interesting. The temple is not dedicated to any god or goddess, rather it is a sort of tribute to the country as it is dedicated to Mother India. The temple was inaugurated by the ‘Father on Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi and houses a marble statue of Mother India for the people to worship. The temple is worth visiting mainly because of its different and unique concept.

Benaras Hindu University - Benaras Hindu University is not only the oldest but also the largest university in entire India spreading over an area of 2000 acres. Established by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, this university offers courses on Indian art, culture, music and Sanskrit. Within the campus are the Bharat Kala Bhavan and a the huge Vishwanath temple. This is the only temple in Varanasi where entry is allowed to anyone interested. The rest of the temples allow entry on the basis of caste and creed. The Bharat Kala Bhavan is a storehouse of miniature paintings, sculptures (from first to fifteenth centuries), old photographs of Varanasi and brocade textiles.

Tulsi Manas Temple - The Tulsi Manas Temple is yet another famous attraction in the town of Varanasi which draws tourists towards it. Dedicated to Lord Rama, the temple stands at the same place where Goswami Tulsidas composed the famous epic of ‘Ramcharitmanas’ (based on the life of Lord Rama). The temple was constructed by a philanthropist family of Varanasi in 1964. The temple is worth visiting once for any tourist visiting the holy city of Varanasi
